Turkey Vultures

Post by Ceropegia » Wed Oct 30, 2019 7:37 am

These turkey vultures are part of a flock of six that partook in the cleanup of a dead opossum in my back yard. I have no idea what caused the death of the critter. When my son noticed them, we went out on the deck to get a better look and try to get some photos, but they immediately took off. So we walked down to find out what they were feasting on. After we went back inside, they soon returned. They were over 100 feet away, the light was not good, and because of their skittishness, I had to settle for getting these photos by standing several feet behind a rather dirty window. They finished within a couple of hours. All that remained was some hair, the tail, the skull and a few bones totally devoid of flesh. Had we not seen the vultures, we probably would never have known the opossum had ever been there.

Love these hard working birds! They are disdained as nasty and ugly, but they're just raptors, only without the charisma and star quality of an eagle. They do important jobs that all of us should appreciate them for, and I take their photos whenever I get the chance! Very nice set.
