Julia Cameron Photographs the Dam Birds

And brings one of her little friends along.

All suggestions appreciated, including shadowing/tinting/sizing, etc. though for a fantasy picture some departure from realism is necessary.

I think the girl needs to go into the background just a hair more. I love the starlight/fog and her contemplative look, she fits well in this image. Which Julia Cameron is this about? The British photographer or the American author? I am guessing the British one - I saw some moody portraits that she did, but the American's story about creativity being a spiritual path is not to be discarded!

And you know I'm gonna ask you how you'd get her into the background more! Shadows? Darkening? Color changes? Moving that component?

contrast is one factor, as things move closer contrast increases. On the color end of things, perhaps take the background colors and lightly blend them into the girl. Also, remove saturation, the closer things are, the greater the saturation would be. And then there is always the trick of putting a cloud/haze between her and us. Make her less pink and more of the colors around her.

All critique on this work of art is above my pay grade....to add to Piet's suggestions you can always try different blend modes and or reduce the opacity of her layer in addition to whatever else works..

I actually tinted her on purpose to get her away from complete sepia like the original version. I tried to do it a little blotchy like hand tinted photos from the era I've seen. So I desaturated the pinks a little and overlaid a coat of the background colors painted in at a reduced opacity. Likewise tinkered with contrast in the girl figure with levels and curves. Then I gave her a hint of a reflection and rippled it. What next? I know you're more advanced than me on this stuff so I value your ideas so much!

yeah, she looks much better. Break up/ripple the reflection - like the reflection of the stones camera left of her. The ends of her shoulder/wings are a little to the front of her, perhaps fade them out a little more, and if the ends of them are close to or touching the water, change/warp the reflection to have the wing reflections begin there at that touch point. And perhaps strengthen the reflection of the wings a little. Warp the reflection a little to ground the reflection onto the water plane.
