"Makah Maiden"

Post by Ernst-Ulrich Schafer »

Edward Curtis made this portrait back in 1916 while visiting the Makah Res out in Neah Bay, WA. Her name is Iva Tyler.

I had the honor last week to photographed Nicole Johnson. She brought her regalia with her, however during the session I asked that she drape her head with a simple blanket.

You photo is an inspiration, as always. But thank you for sharing the Curtis image that inspired you to make it! It reminds me so much of Afghan Girl and I wonder if McCurry had any influence from it. Curtis's work amazes me. I was lucky to see a special exhibit of his work some years ago at the Smithsonian, just as I was starting to be re-interested in photography. I've had him on my to-do list for the Monthly Masters for a while. Maybe now is the time to finish that one up and post it.

Like Minnie said, "very inspirational."

Your's is definitely moodier due to the darker tones but I also feel it portrays more emotion through her expression. Curtis' seems more journalistic but I'm sure that was the original intent in his desire to document the native people of America.

Thanks for sharing and I'm looking forward to your book. ;)

Beautifully done. Love the second with just that bit of her hand. Your images of the regalia are always things of great beauty and power.

The Curtis is striking, but this had the impression of the Mother Mary. Well done, especially preserving her heritage! S-
