Simple Man

Post by RussElkins »

Hi,
I'm Russ. My passion is human expression. I try to match processing style with expression to form mood.
I am very fond of taking street portraits(I am not a street photographer!) of anyone that looks interesting.
Critques and comments welcome.

Hi Russ, welcome to photoMENTORIS I am glad to see you here. The community just got stronger with your knowledge added to it.

As for critique well there is not much to say about this image aside from it being a great example of a black and white character study. The detail and luminous balance of the light across the frame is exceptional. The only tiny nit I have is that I would personally prefer a touch more light in the eyes but that is a very minimal and personal opinion.

Yea I here you on the eyes. Part of my style in many of these shots is to underexpose around the eyes and try and bring out a little more of the catch light. It just depends on the mood I am going for with the shot. This is one thing that make me a little different. I often don't do things text book. (As you know) I do believe I have problems with every image I make. Sometimes I'll leave a few artifacts that I take care of later. I really hate to post and then find errors. Recently it's made me review my post timeline process. I am tending to wait a day or two more and come back and look at the image. I was ok with this one though.

Another example of the darker eyes was done when we got together in Vegas last year. This one was titled "The Sorrows".
Vegas has a target rich environment for this type of shooting, although it felt a bit dangerous at times.
I did create a record there on the walk with all our friends. Four portfolio images in one day.

Here's an example of two darker shots.
1) was taken in Vegas and was called the Sorrows
2) was taken in Morgantown of a subject named Shane. (Shane died last year from a fall.)

Welcome to pM... :) Wow, what great images. The standout for me though is The Wicked Within. Incredibly powerful treatment of this person. Not really a lot I can say after these except well done on them all. I look forward to seeing more of your work here. :)
