Let's Make Christmas/Holiday Cards!

Post by minniev »

Let's challenge ourselves to make a holiday card to celebrate the season and learn something new. You can use any software you'd like and make this as simple or complex as you want to. No voting, no awards, just fun and learning and sharing amongst friends.

Some possible software solutions:

Graphics and Photo programs like Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, On1, GIMP, Paintshop, Painter
Document programs like Word, Apple Pages
Publication programs like Printshop
Free Online sites like Canva https://www.canva.com/
Lightroom (though you'll have more options if you use a program that supports layers)

Google Free Christmas of Holiday Graphics if you want some, or scan in items you have on hand to get elements for your card. I like these https://gallery.yopriceville.com/Free-Clipart-Pictures/Christmas-PNG?page=38

The only rule is you've gotta include at least a portion of a photo you took, or someone took of you.

Here's mine, and a screenshot of the craziness of it in PS showing the layers. If you plan out your strategy in advance instead of making it up as you go like me, you'll do lots better than I did!

Plan in advance?! I don't think I'll ever reach that goal, Minnie :D

I adore your task-oriented egret!

Trixie is wearing a clip-art wreath (thanks for the great link to the png files) and a real sweater a friend knitted for her several years ago. The two-color mat was done in Picasa. I also have a texure layer, a "soft and dreamy" layer from Topaz Detail, a "Film Efex Nostalgic" layer from Nik Color Efex, a "sunlight" layer from Nik Color Efex, and I erased half the wreath.

I haven't done one this year yet, but here's one I did last year. Hope it counts.

Love it! So warm and fanciful! Glad you liked the free graphics, I liked that little edge of fantasy you get from adding them to a photo.

I'm glad you did two! If you do more later, add them too, and I hope others will too. This one is terrific - moon, llamas, Christmas lights! You could sell this one easily. I love it!

Of course it counts! But you can add another (or more) later, the more the merrier. Really like the colors and especially how you created the reflection on the table. Nice mix of elements. Thank you for sharing!

Okay, so I got off my but and cobbled this together with some random leftover props from last year. I'm including a BTS in a spoiler for those who are interested. Enjoy.

Excellent Duck, lots of color, good design using fun elements, cool type (with a drop shadow, even!).

I hope to find a few hours where I can create something else myself. I just watched this free tutorial about how to make a Christmas card in Photoshop, from this vendor where I get a lot of freebies and occasionally buy something (I splurged on the $2 bundle) https://www.designcuts.com/product/illustrated-festive-elements/
